The Statue of Liberty arrives in New York
The Statue of Liberty reached New York Harbor from France, packed into more than 200 crates aboard a steamer. Reassembled on her pedestal, she became the first thing millions of immigrants saw as they arrived, a copper welcome raised on the idea that a country could be built by newcomers.
